Named after the infamous Walt Whitman poem of the same name and borrowed from the original Lenape term for the island, this community revolves around the daily lives of New Yorkers. The five boroughs that make up the metropolis each have their own personalities, and despite a population of 8 million people and growing, it somehow manages to maintain the air of a small city. Residents often find themselves running into people they know in the places they'd least expect: that old friend from high school on the D train that you almost never take, that scary thesis advisor from ages ago on 13th Street, the much-hated boss at the local park's dog run, a next door neighbor while brunching on the completely opposite end of town - or maybe even in a different borough altogether. Mannahatta thrives on the connections, both major and minor, between its residents.

1. This community follows the basic rules of roleplay, and the number one rule is therefore this: please, please never cross IC with OOC. That's a great way to kill off a game, and we really don't want to see that happen.
2. Godmodding is out. Just don't do it.
3. We don't have an update limit, but it would be nice to see you being generally active - just because we're not demanding that you update every week doesn't mean that you can't, and similarly, it doesn't mean that you can get away with role hogging. In lieu of an activity requirement, we conduct monthly activity checks that consist of asking each character who wishes to remain active in the game comment to an activity post.
4. Each character must have at least one connection to another. This can be to a character who you're entering the game with, or someone already in game. These connections don't need to be detailed; a simple neighbor or coworker line will suffice. Use ![[info]](http://www.insanejournal.com/img/community.gif) subwaymap to figure out lines with characters who are both in game and considering applying (membership is open, so feel free to join). As stated in the application post, don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you're struggling to find a connection. We will always do our best to help you out!
5. Realism isn't a rule but a very solid guideline. This is RP, not everyone knows everything about New York, one of the mods doesn't even live in the States so mistakes will likely be made, but in terms of characters and their development, you owe it to yourselves to make your characters three-dimensional and realistic. With regards to PBs, however, we ask that your PB can actually pass for your character's age.
6. The current character limit is 5. This is subject to change at any time, but we'll let you know. If, after five characters, you want another, it's subject to the mods' approval. We probably won't have an issue with it unless you're chronically inactive, though.
7. IC AIM, though encouraged, is not required.
8. We ask that you post an in character entry, thread or scene within one week of being added, or you'll be removed. To us, it seems unlikely that you'll be more active after that period and we obviously discourage role-hogging. If you really cannot post within the first week for a good reason, let us know in the drop box.
9. Placing a hold is not required, but if you have a popular PB, feel free to do so here. Holds last 72 hours and can be extended for an additional 48, if needed.
10. If you are removed three times for inactivity, you will not be reaccepted to the game. It's unfair to have people reapply over and over and not be at all active.
